Staying in Lisbon
Lisbon spreads across steep hills above the Tagus river, with pastel buildings, tiled facades and viewpoints at every turn. Ride the famous Tram 28 through Alfama, climb up to São Jorge Castle, and head to Belém for the Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower and a warm pastel de nata. Sintra's fairytale palaces are an easy day trip by train.
Flights from the UK take around two and a half to three hours, with direct routes from London and many regional airports. To find cheap flights to Lisbon, look at spring and autumn dates, which often bring lower fares as well as comfortable temperatures. Pack comfortable shoes, as the cobbled hills are steep.
Best time to visit: March to June and September to October are ideal, with warm, sunny days and fewer crowds than in high summer.
