Rome is a city where you can pass two thousand years of history on the way to lunch. Stand inside the Colosseum, wander through the Roman Forum, toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain and gaze up at the Pantheon's dome. Across the river, the cobbled streets of Trastevere come alive in the evening with trattorias and wine bars.

Flights from the UK take around two and a half hours, with direct routes from London and several regional airports, many of them into Fiumicino. For cheap flights to Rome, aim for spring or autumn and compare fares across the week. Leave time for the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, and book entry slots ahead.

Best time to visit: April to May and late September to October are ideal, with warm days for sightseeing and fewer crowds than in midsummer.
